The Nodes of the Moon
The nodes of the Moon are often used in many different systems of Astrology. Most Astrologers know what they are and how they apply them in their work. I never really had an understanding of the nodes or how I could use them in my charts until I read a book on Karmic Astrologyby Martin Schulman. This book premises the effect of the nodes on the theory of reincarnation. Since I believe in reincarnation, which I realize many Astrologers do not, I often base my work in Astrology on past lives and karma while this is a spin that not all Astrologers have faith in. But, in short, this book gave me a perspective on the nodes that worked for me. Although I do not buy into everything he says in the book, some of his descriptive readings are a bit over the top for me, I use the jist of his theories in most of my work.
You will have noticed when reading a case chart on my blog that I refer to “fated”, “karmic” events or that things were “meant to happen”. This is almost always related to the position of the nodes. Of course, the way that you would use the nodes in your forensic work would be related to what you feel the nodes represent. In some systems they represent mass consciousness and trends. In other systems, they describe public opinion and the way matters may go in the eyes of the public. In other systems, they represent sensitive areas of the chart which can cause things to happen or to come to an end.
No matter what you believe in regards to the nodes, you must always consider them in the forensic chart. In fact, when considering what the reasons might be behind any given action the nodes are critical. Depending upon your theories about the nodes, they may also represent public knowledge of the crime, the involvement of the public on the outcome, the fated nature of events as they occur, fated bonds between persons, the effect of uncontrolled events and general trends on the circumstances of the case. The way I read it, based upon my own theories and belief systems, is to see the karmic ties between individuals and the fated nature of events. Often I find a strong tie between attacker and victim that precedes this life. When the nodes combine with strong ties between attacker and victim, such as conjunctions or squares involving personal planets, then you must consider the possibility that there is a karmic effect. If you don’t believe this extends beyond the current life then you must at least consider that they either knew each other from somewhere in the past or that the attacker chose his victim and stalked him or her long enough to create a relationship, even it was only in the mind.
There was a case I worked on a long time ago where a killer murdered two women. The first woman he killed very quickly and spent very little time with. It was over quickly with little “fanfare”, so to speak. However, the second woman was a different affair. He spent hours with this girl, raping her repeatedly, abusing her to some extent, toying with her and then stabbing her in the back. He knew neither girl, they were random picks, a part of a helter skelter serial pattern he was employing. He was able to murder the first woman, face to face, stabbing her swiftly and leaving her otherwise untouched. So what was the difference? He spent hours with the second woman and had to stab her in the back, the mark of a person afraid to look their victim in the eye. Why were the feelings and actions different with each girl? Looking at the charts of both murderer and victims, the picture was clear. This killer had no planetary contacts with the first girl at all, mainly semi sextiles and sextiles between non personal planets. But with the second girl, it was startling. They had conjunctions both ways between Venus and Mars, trines from their Moons to Jupiter, Uranus and Venus, from one to the other. Sparks all over the place. As well, there were many positive and negative aspects involving personal planets with the nodes. So this cruel man had unexpected feelings for the second victim and maybe even an unrealized karmic bond. So he gave her more of his anger and lust, in no way wanted by this young lady, but a gift in his own perverted eyes.
In considering the nodes, you should explore their house placement, their sign placement, whether they are engaged in special configurations like being under the sun’s beams or a part of a grand trine. Consider the movement of other planets towards aspects with the nodes and the static distance between the nodes to the angular cusps. Remember always that the nodes move backwards and not forwards, meaning that as they lose longitude they are actually sinister in aspect. But of all else, the single most important thing about the nodes is their dispositors. This placement will tell you what the true entire picture is as it regards the nodes position. And to sum this up I must insist that you use the nodes of the Moon in all of your forensic work. Apply them in the manner that best suits your own personal beliefs, of course, but always look to the nodes for their influence on the matter at hand.

Martin Shulman has a good book on the nodes. I have also written a book called “Psychiatric Astrology” and the nodes are definitely a part of many cases.
