The Role of Mars in the Forensic Chart
You probably have a good idea about the type of energies and influences that Mars generates. It is pretty much standard across the board from natal to progressed charts and even in composites. Mars is the planet that translates aggression, energy, life force, vitality, sexual desire, strength and vigor. It has some elements in common with both the Sun and Saturn. Good aspects from the Sun amplify vigor, vitality and the life force. Good aspects to Saturn amplify strength and offer also discipline, conviction and authority. Mars is a valuable fast moving planet that can change circumstances in a heartbeat. This is much the quality that it exerts over most forensic charts.
As in any other chart, Mars can show aggression. If Mars is in aspect to the first house or seventh house ruler, you can measure the aggression to and from which player. Mars in the seventh house can go a long way in describing an attack and the attacker. Mars in the tenth gives off paternal energies and in the fourth house can describe assault within the home. But you already know this if you are an Astrologer. The differences occur in the ticking off of events where Mars is in aspect to slower moving but well placed planets. There is no doubt that a cadent Mars in a cadent house will slow things down whereever the aspect occurs but in most cases it can be used to time the instigation of events. Even if that doesn’t occur for weeks or months. Mars involved in an aspect like the translation of light or as the short leg of a T Square can not only have profound effects on events but actually describe the events as well as give the measure of time.

In the forensic chart, where violence, murder and mayhem are all factors in the disappearance and death of persons, you would look closely at certain aspects involving Mars. Is it angular? From which house? This will tell you who is creating the violence or starting the fight. It is sometimes the subject, so don’t forget that. Never allow expectations to put your mind in a box. In the Natalie Holloway case, for instance, Mars in the first house in aspect to key planets showed clearly that the “fight” that occurred that night was started by Natalie. She was either resisting or attacking back. But she fought like hell. Mars shows that clearly. And who knows, if she had not fought, if she had remained passive, would she have died? Of course, we are not trying to answer existential questions or theorize about what might have happened, but to use Astrology to find out what DID happen and solve the case at hand.
Other important aspects involving Mars include determining it’s place in the chart in relation to the other planets. Even if it is not angular, it may make aspects to other key planets in angular placements and exert influence from that vantage point. As the short leg in a T Square, Mars is telling you the only way to resolve the conflict presented by the T Square is violence. A fight will have to occur. Mars translating the light from one planet to another may be telling you that violence or aggression is caused by outside factors; someone else has entered the scene, perhaps, and changed the dynamics. Mars in relation to the first house ruler or the first house in general will tell you a lot. In a private case I did recently, I found Mars fell in the twelfth house, behind the first house ruler in the first house. This told me this woman was shot from behind with a gun and most likely to the head area. Although her body has yet to be found, the authorities generally believe this to be the case based on the evidence and the smug confessions of her accused killer. In most cases the first house ruler in the first house will tell you the subject is “in their own place” or generally where “they want to be”.. and in this case the woman was, in fact, in a truck of her own free will. She not only got into the truck but was seen walking around the truck at gas stations, obviously not restrained and free to shout for help. But with Mars aspecting the seventh house ruler by square (creating impetus) from the twelfth house (behind her), it was obvious how she died, however safe she might have felt.
Look for aspects between Mars and Pluto to see violence as it develops. Watch Mars and Venus for sexual energies that may arise. Also, Mars and Saturn for the disposal of body parts. If Saturn is very prominent, assume they are bones. Mars in certain charts can show the hacking of the body or continued destruction after death. This was obvious in the Stacy Peterson case where Mars clearly showed her husband having at the body and hacking her into pieces. Mars in combination with air sign placements or in air signs can finger strangulation or asphyxiation at the time of death. Water signs can show forced drowning. Earth signs have been known to show live burial. Remember that when Mars is in play, the victim is often still alive, as Mars does not show actual death the way Saturn does. It shows the VIOLENCE that leads to death. The actions that bring it about. So when you watch Mars in action, remember that. Except when in combination with Saturn, where you may be seeing the burial or destruction of bones, Mars generations actions that are taken while the victim is still alive. Even in combination with Neptune this is true. In this case, it describes secret violence or violence involving drugs, sedation, drowning, etc… cases where the subject may be unconcious.
Mars in combination with Jupiter can show overzealousness. A tendency to “go too far”. Often you will see this aspect in cases where people were killed accidentally or during the commission of a different crime. Mars and Jupiter create overconfidence so often the killer does not imagine that things are out of control. They can beat people to death or choke them without realizing. When Mars and Jupiter are combined with Pluto or Venus (or both) you often see that sexual violence leads to death, often unintended. This is the woman or child who is murdered during a vicious sexual attack. This is most often seen where victims are smothered or suffocated by a larger assailant or are killed through the commission of repeated rapes. When you see Mars in combination with Pluto and Venus but without Jupiter, the murder can be more intentional. It is less a case of zealousness and more calculating. Pluto and Venus often define obsession, sexual insistance and stalking. Combine these energies with Mars and you have a rape cocktail, often with the intention of murder to hide the evidence. In looking for those clues, look at Neptune.
The last thing you should consider when reading the energies of Mars is how it affects the timing of events. Mars is fast moving and instigating. If you see that Mars is sinister to a primary or angular planet, look to see how far away that actual aspect is. Is it within a few degrees? Is it angular? This would mean hours or, at the most, days. Is it cadent, retrograde, in distant aspect? Then the event may never occur at all or only occur after many years. This type of timing is most important in trying to determine when evidence will be found or when the case may be solved. If you learn to use Mars and Saturn together with the tenth house ruler, you can work out a timeline for the authorities. Will it be years or months or days? Will evidence ever appear and when? Looking closely at Saturn to see the remains, watch when Mars reaches an aspect and determine how long it will be before something happens to those remains. Mars moving in a water sign or house may show bones washing to the shore; Mars moving through the tenth house may show a tip or a public finding; Mars in the sixth house may show the discovery by searchers; Mars in aspect to Uranus could mean the sudden discovery of either the body or of evidence at some point in the future. Timing is complex and takes a lot of practice but don’t forget to use your intuition and go with your gut, if it is pushing you in a certain direction. Astrology is a science but it is also a metaphysical one so don’t get too bogged down in facts. Use the science to direct your mind but at some point, the gut will take over. When you get to the point that you can combine the two, you will be on your way to brilliance. Good luck!
