Arabic Parts Formulas
Most Astrologers are already aware of the Arabic Parts Formulas and use some of them in their charts. They are not all that arcane, although I would tend to believe that not all of them are truly known by most Astrologers. They are used commonly in natal and transiting charts, with the most common formula being the Part of Fortune. Everybody cares about their finances and whether or not they will be rich or poor. And the Part of Fortune is often used to predict that, often with great accuracy. However, the Part of Fortune is not often used in forensic charts, as someone’s finances or financial luck has little to do with the questions at hand. Even in those charts where you are trying to find money or lost valuables, it is very rarely the Part of Fortune that gives clues as to their current whereabouts.
So what formulas ARE used in forensic charts? Well, that would depend upon the question. The ones I have used most often in forensic and horary charts are the parts of marriage, change, life, death and sickness. The parts of marriage and sickness are often used in event charts. For instance, someone has the planned wedding day and time and wants to know how the marriage will turn out. In this instance, the Part of Marriage will help create another dimension to be compared to the horary. I use both the part formula for the birth and event charts and compare them, watching transits. If someone else has a date arranged to get treatment for an illness, such as chemotherapy or surgery, the Part of Sickness can be used in the same way. But in the kind of forensic charts that I do on the blog, missing persons, death charts, murders, unsolved mysteries, etc… I use the formulas for the Part of Slavery and Bondage, Part of Discord and Controversy, Part of Death (or Change), Part of the Most Perilous and Dangerous Year, Part of Journeys by Water, Part of Travels by Land, Part of Imprisonment, Sorrow and Captivity and the Part of Private Enemies. I know these are arcane and rarely heard of, this is why I discuss them with you as a part of the learning process. I do not use them every time I read a chart but when I feel I need more information, I often go there. Also, I do not discuss them a lot in the cases I place on the blog because they are not often heard of and I do not want to complicate my posts with difficult explanations. Therefor, I may use them and not mention them on the blog.
For those of you who do not have these formulas, I am going to give them to you now and you should work them a few times to get used to them. Try doing them in the charts of people you have known that have lived and died and that you know enough about to measure how well they work. Once you get the hang of them, then you can try using them in a forensic chart and giving them some credance in your reading. You might be amazed at how often they give you new insights that later prove accurate; I think the Arabs were the most amazing mathematicians in history and they gave a great deal of science to Astrology.
The Part of Slavery and Bondage: Add the longitude of the Ascendant to the longitude of the Moon. Determine the dispositor of the Moon and deduct the longitude of the planet from the total.
Part of Discord and Controversy: Add the longitude of the Ascendant to the longitude of Jupiter. Subtract from the total the longitude of Mars.
Part of Death or Change: Determine the longitude of the eighth house cusp. Add the longitude of the Ascendant to this degree. From the total, subtract the longitude of the Moon.
Part of the Most Dangerous Year: (This should be done only from the natal chart and the position compared to current transits). Locate the ruler of the eighth house. Take the longitude of this planet and add it to the longitude of the Ascendant. From this total, subtract the longitude of Saturn.
Part of Journeys By Water: Add 15 degrees of the sign Cancer (105 degrees) to the longitude of the Ascendant. Subtract the longitude of Saturn from the total.
Part of Journeys By Land: Determine the longitude of the ninth house cusp and add it to the longitude of the Ascendant. Locate the ruler of the ninth house and subtract the longitude of this planet from the total.
Part of Imprisonment, Sorrow and Captivity: (This should only be doe from the natal chart and the position compared to current transits). Add the longitude of the natal Part of Fortune to the longitude of the Ascendant. Subtract the longitude of Neptune from this total.
Part of Private Enemies: (This should only be done from the natal chart and the position compared to current transits). Determine the longitude of the cusp of the twelfth house. Add this to the longitude of the Ascendant. Determine the ruler of the twelfth house and subtract the longitude of this planet from the total.
In all cases, unless otherwise noted, parts formulas should be done for both the forensic chart and the birth chart and both compared, along with current transits. These formulas will give you the sign position of the part and you place it in the chart like you would a planet.
Practice with these formulas until you are familiar with them and can see how they work in natal, transiting and forensic charts. When you cast your next forensic chart, work out these formulas and write down what you discover. And then move on the next post, Fixed Stars.
